Adana
Adana is the 5th largest city in
Turkey (after
Istanbul,
Ankara,
Izmir and
Bursa).
As of
2006,
Adana had an estimated population of 1,271,894.
The city is known for its rich history (going back 3,000 years, and linked to the ancient
city of Tarsus). Famous buildings in the area include:
- The Stone Bridge of Adana (Turkish: Tasköprü)
which spans the Seyhan River.
This bridge was originally built during the
reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD,
but has been damaged by earthquakes many times over the centuries,
and repaired - including during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor
Justinian I in the 6th century, the Umayyad caliph al-Walid II during
the 7th century, and the caliph al-Mu'tasim during the 8th century.
As a result, only 14 of the original 21 arches remain, but nevertheless,
the bridge is the oldest bridge in the world which is still in use today.
- Yilanli Kale - The ruins of a castle dating back to 782.
- The Great Clock (Turkish: Büyük Saat) - A large clock tower built in
1882. The clock was damaged during the period of French occupation (1918
to the early days of
1922), but rebuilt in
1935. The clock tower is
a popular local symbol, and its image can be seen on the city's coat of arms.
- Bazaar of Cauldron-Makers (Turkish: Kazancilar Çarsisi) - The old bazaar.
- Bath of the Bazaar - (Turkish: Çarsi Hamami) - A Turkish bath dating back
to 1519, which is adjacent to the old bazaaar.
Adana is known within Turkey, and by Turkish people,
for its hot weather,
oranges (which grow in the area),
salgam suyu (a drink, which despite the name literally translated from Turkish
meaning "turnip juice", is actually made from salted and spiced purple carrot pickles, and only
flavored with turnips), and of course Adana kebabs, which are long grilled meat kebabs that originally come
from the city.
